Time's Finite, Waste it Wisely

Assalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuh!

It's been just over a month since the first post. Anyone else notice how fast the days go by? There was a time in my life and maybe even in your own, where I can recall being a child simply wanting to grow up. Back then, the concept of time didn't really exist. It simply wasn't something we valued as children. But as an adult, you really begin to realize the importance of time. Today's topic is about time. It's one of the many blessings that Allah has given us, yet we often don't make proper use of it. It's very easy to neglect time with so many distractions going on around us. But, it's crucial that we make the effort to be more conscious of how we spend it. We only have a finite amount of it before we are called back to Allah. So, it's up to us to make the most of it. Allah swears by time in the Quran. When Allah swears by something in the the Quran, it's done for a few reasons. One the reasons is to really emphasize the thing that is being mentioned. So when Allah swears by time in Surah Al-Asr, it's done to make us reflect on the severity of it. The Surah is translated as follows: "By time. Indeed, mankind is in loss. Except for those who believe and do good deeds, and advise each other to truth and advise one another to patience". Allah is teaching us through the mention of time to focus on these four traits which will allow us to win in this life and in the hereafter. It's normal for us to run after all kinds things, and it's also a part of human nature. But, as Muslims we should be more aware of what it is we are running after. It's very easy to chase things that are actually a distraction from our true purpose- which is to worship Allah. And it's normal to slip up every once in a while as long as we don't make going after the wrong things a lifestyle. We shouldn't allow our daily habits to cloud our reality. The Prophet (SAW) said about time in a Hadith: “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) health and free time for doing good” (Sahih Bukhari). So, let's work hard to make use of these blessings In Shaa Allah. I think a good place to start is to ask ourselves, “what did I do today? What are some better ways I could have used my time? How much time did I waste, if any at all?” I think just doing things to reflect on ourselves at the end of every day can do a lot for our productivity, and in turn will allow us to realize the gift of time.
